Recent studies have found an overrepresentation of youth with diverse sexual orientation and gender identity and expression (SOGIE) in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems, yet programs and services designed to serve the needs of this population are challenging to locate. There have been significant advancements to address the needs of youth involved in public systems – child welfare, juvenile justice, mental health, substance use, Medicaid, housing, and homelessness – and this new center provides a much-needed clearinghouse for these efforts. Led by The Institute for Innovation and Implementation at the University of Maryland’s School of Social Work (The Institute), the National SOGIE Center consolidates the latest evidence-based tools, trainings, and other resources, as well as consultation, for those working in public youth-serving systems.

The Baker Center, a national leader in children’s mental health, has received a 5-year grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to join it’s National Child Traumatic Stress Initiative. The grant will be used to develop the Center for Traumatic Stress and Comorbidity (CTSC) and provide comprehensive training, implementation, and technical assistance to children’s mental health centers around the country. The goal of the grant is to improve outcomes for children and families impacted by traumatic stress, co-morbid conditions, and associated family issues.

The Baker Center, a national leader in children’s mental health, named Dr. Gary R. Lyon,EdD, MPA to the role of Vice President of Innovation and External Affairs and Senior Diversity Officer. Dr. Lyon collaborates with the CEO, VP of Programs, and senior management team to drive innovation in children's behavioral health and special education. Dr. Lyon also acts as an external liaison representing JBCC in local, regional, and national venues. As a Senior Diversity Officer (SDO), he is responsible for developing organization-wide diversity and inclusion programs. In addition, he works with senior management and Human Resources to conduct organization-wide training, promote diversity and inclusion, resolve challenges and conflicts, and establish metrics to measure progress towards goals.
