Research
Basheer lab research focuses on the molecular, cellular and biochemical regulation of sleep, sleep homeostasis. and state- associated cortical oscillations. Her approach includes genetics, in vivo electrophysiology, neuroanatomical and neurochemical techniques, including the cutting-edge methodologies of CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing and endoscopic calcium imaging to assess neuronal activity in vivo. The specific objective is identify molecular targets for pharmacological interventions as well as to understand the functional interaction of multiple neuronal subtypes in the onset and maintenance of behavioral states. Currently her work is focused on the role of basal forebrain and thalamic structures in the regulation of sleep and wakefulness and sleep-wake-associated cortical oscillations.
